Leurs recherches ont port\u00e9 sur l'algue Melosira arctica, qui se d\u00e9veloppe sous les glaces de l'Arctique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Initialement consid\u00e9r\u00e9e comme prot\u00e9g\u00e9e de la pollution humaine, cette algue est la seule source de nourriture d'une faune marine diversifi\u00e9e dans les r\u00e9gions arctiques. En tant que maillon central de l'\u00e9cosyst\u00e8me marin arctique, Melosira arctica occupe le point de d\u00e9part de la cha\u00eene alimentaire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Cependant, en y regardant de plus pr\u00e8s, les scientifiques ont fait une d\u00e9couverte d\u00e9concertante. En se d\u00e9composant, la plante s'enfonce dans les profondeurs de l'oc\u00e9an, entra\u00eenant avec elle des milliers de particules de microplastiques. Les chercheurs pensent que la pr\u00e9sence de microplastiques dans la glace de l'Arctique pourrait expliquer les niveaux de pollution \u00e9lev\u00e9s et inattendus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Ces algues d\u00e9pendent de l'eau contenue dans la glace pour leur survie et poss\u00e8dent des s\u00e9diments distincts que l'on ne trouve g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement pas dans l'eau de mer. Toutefois, ce caract\u00e8re unique, qui fait de l'eau glac\u00e9e une source de nourriture apparemment pure, permet \u00e9galement la propagation rapide des microplastiques dans l'ensemble de l'oc\u00e9an<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">La forte concentration de microplastiques est pr\u00e9occupante. Les scientifiques pr\u00e9viennent que si l'environnement imm\u00e9diat des algues conna\u00eet d\u00e9j\u00e0 une pollution sans pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent, les cons\u00e9quences pourraient s'\u00e9tendre bien au-del\u00e0 de la banquise. En effet, comme nous l'avons d\u00e9j\u00e0 mentionn\u00e9, les algues constituent une source de nourriture essentielle dans les r\u00e9gions arctiques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Cette pollution pr\u00e9sente \u00e9galement des risques pour la sant\u00e9 humaine. Les poissons p\u00each\u00e9s dans les zones arctiques sont susceptibles d'\u00eatre contamin\u00e9s par des microplastiques. De plus, la pr\u00e9sence de microplastiques dans le \"corps\" de l'algue complique le processus de photosynth\u00e8se. Par cons\u00e9quent, la capture du carbone est entrav\u00e9e, ce qui contribue au r\u00e9chauffement de la plan\u00e8te. Il faut savoir que la pollution plastique repr\u00e9sente 2,3 millions de tonnes de d\u00e9chets dans les oc\u00e9ans, dont une part importante se d\u00e9compose en particules \"microplastiques\" ne mesurant que 20 \u00e0 30 \u03bcm. Elles agissent comme un balai qui recueille les diff\u00e9rents d\u00e9chets.
