La investigaci\u00f3n se centr\u00f3 en el alga Melosira arctica, que crece bajo el hielo \u00e1rtico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Inicialmente considerada protegida de la contaminaci\u00f3n humana, esta alga constituye la \u00fanica fuente de alimento de una variada fauna marina de las regiones \u00e1rticas. Como eslab\u00f3n central del ecosistema marino \u00e1rtico, Melosira arctica ocupa el punto de partida de la cadena alimentaria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Sin embargo, tras un examen m\u00e1s detallado, los cient\u00edficos hicieron un descubrimiento desconcertante. Al descomponerse, la planta se hunde en las profundidades del oc\u00e9ano, arrastrando consigo miles de part\u00edculas de micropl\u00e1sticos. Los investigadores especulan que la presencia de micropl\u00e1sticos en el hielo \u00e1rtico puede explicar los niveles de contaminaci\u00f3n inesperadamente altos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Estas algas dependen del agua del hielo para subsistir, y poseen sedimentos distintos que no suelen encontrarse en el agua de mar. Sin embargo, esta singularidad, que hace del agua del hielo una fuente de alimento aparentemente pura, tambi\u00e9n permite la r\u00e1pida propagaci\u00f3n de micropl\u00e1sticos por todo el oc\u00e9ano<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">La elevada concentraci\u00f3n de micropl\u00e1sticos es motivo de preocupaci\u00f3n. Los cient\u00edficos advierten de que si el entorno inmediato de las algas ya est\u00e1 sufriendo una contaminaci\u00f3n sin precedentes, las consecuencias podr\u00edan extenderse mucho m\u00e1s all\u00e1 del manto de hielo. Al fin y al cabo, como ya se ha dicho, las algas son una fuente crucial de alimento en las regiones \u00e1rticas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Esta contaminaci\u00f3n tambi\u00e9n plantea riesgos para la salud humana. El pescado capturado en las zonas \u00e1rticas puede estar contaminado por micropl\u00e1sticos. Adem\u00e1s, la presencia de micropl\u00e1sticos en el \"cuerpo\" de las algas complica el proceso de fotos\u00edntesis. En consecuencia, se dificulta la captura de carbono, lo que contribuye al calentamiento global.
