Thanks to the Sargassum citizen science network, scientists and researchers have been able to highlight the three models that are invading&nbsp;the&nbsp;Caribbean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Under optimal conditions, they can double in volume&nbsp;in&nbsp;a&nbsp;week !<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>Sargassum fluitans<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;have thorny stems whereas,&nbsp;<em><strong>Sargassum natans<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;have smooth stems. Bladder and blade attributes differ widely among forms. (A) For&nbsp;<strong><em>Sargassum fluitans&nbsp;III<\/em><\/strong>, thorns on stem are present, blades are wide, bladders are devoid of spines, and bladders are oblong. The macro-algae sheltering many marine animals have suddenly increased in volume, going so far as to recurrently flood the white sand beaches of the Caribbean. At first the invasion was seasonal.<br><br>In recent years, Sargassum has formed a second sea in the ZIC (intertropical convergence zone) in northern Brazil. In these waters of constant heat, these brown algae grow all year round and then wash up by the millions of tons on the coastlines of more than 30 countries in the Caribbean and elsewhere.
